Welcome to The Rewrite Workshops!

We’re so excited to introduce ourselves and share what The Rewrite Workshops is all about. Our mission is simple: to build a community of writers who use storytelling as a tool for self-empowerment. Whether you’re an experienced writer or picking up the pen for the first time, we’re here to help you reclaim your narrative and find your voice.

Let’s dive into some FAQs to get to know each other better!

Who are you?

Hi, I’m Penelope (Penny) Cottrell, and my friend Ria DeMay and I are the founders The Rewrite Workshops. We met at—no surprise—a creative writing workshop in the summer of 2024. That three-day experience not only helped us refine our works in progress (WIPs) but also sparked a lasting friendship.

Through months of reading each other’s work and deep conversations, we realized we both used writing as a means of processing experiences and healing. Then came the big idea: What if we created a writing workshop specifically designed for self-empowerment? And just like that, The Rewrite Workshops was born.

Meet the Founders

Penelope Cottrell is a writer, educator, and literary advocate passionate about helping others develop their craft and find their authentic voice. She co-authored the book Act Liberally and serves as the regional representative for the Central Piedmont region of the North Carolina Writers’ Network. With a background in education and personal training, she brings a dynamic, goal-oriented approach to writing instruction, fostering a supportive and engaging environment for all writers.

Ria DeMay has always been a storyteller, but her journey took a winding path—from studying Mass Communications and Journalism to earning a law degree and spending 16 years in labor and employment law, policy, and advocacy. Eventually, she felt the undeniable pull back to creative writing, leading her to leave behind legal work and fully embrace storytelling. Now, she’s dedicated to helping others reclaim their narratives through The Rewrite Workshops. Her work explores themes of hope, resilience, and redemption, and she ensures that no story goes untold, and no life goes unlived.

Who are these workshops for?

Anyone interested in writing as a tool for self-empowerment! You don’t need to be an experienced writer to join us. Our workshops are designed to be accessible, welcoming, and transformative—whether you’ve been journaling for years or have never put your story into words before.

What does a Rewrite Workshop look like?

We offer six-week writing intensives that guide you through the writing process—from your initial “discovery draft” to your final version. Each week focuses on a different step in shaping your personal narrative. Through guided activities, writing exercises, and a supportive community, you’ll rediscover your voice, reshape your story, and step into your power.

Each workshop is capped at ten participants to ensure personalized feedback and a close-knit group dynamic. We also encourage our cohorts to stay connected beyond the workshop—just like Ria and I did!

Additionally, as part of our commitment to community empowerment, we offer free three-hour workshops for nonprofit organizations supporting individuals on their journeys of healing and growth.

Our workshops are available both online and in person.

What if I’m not a writer?

That’s totally okay! Our workshops focus on your story, not technical perfection. You don’t need to be the next great novelist to benefit from writing as a tool for self-reflection and self-compassion. We believe everyone deserves the chance to tell their story.

Do I have to share my writing?

Not at all! While participating in discussions can deepen your experience, we respect personal boundaries. You’re never required to share anything you’re not comfortable with, and we offer flexible ways to engage while maintaining privacy.

Where are you located?

We’re based in the Raleigh metro area of North Carolina, where we host in-person workshops. We also offer virtual workshops via Zoom, so you can join from anywhere!

Is there homework?

Sometimes! While most of the work happens in the sessions, there may be occasional exercises to help you deepen your writing practice between meetings.

Where can I register for a workshop?

You can visit our website, www.rewriteworkshops.com, to register, and follow us on Instagram @rewriteworkshops.

We look forward to writing with you soon!
